Chandra – God Of The Moon, Night, Plants And Vegetation

Known as the mother of the heavens and queen of the night, Moon or Chandra is the ultimate queen of the entire solar system. In other Mythology, she is known as Diana or Luna which comes from her being the queen of the night. According to ancient stories particularly the Harivansha Purana, the moon was the good looking son of Sage Atri and taken care of by the 10 directions.

Daksha Prajapati had 27 daughters which later became the wives of the moon. The daughters are named the 27 nakshatras that are constellations in the zodiac. Moon however favoured Rohini a little more than his other wives. He visits them for one day in rotation. His father in law Daksha grew angry when he ran away with the wife of Brihaspati (Jupiter), Tara. Daksha cursed the moon to gradual decay. Mercury was born out of the relation of Chandra and Tara.

Moon holds a very special place in Indian culture. People break their fast on Karwa Chauth after the moon has appeared. Along with that, people following Ramzan have a fond relationship with the moon. They are to start having their meal once the moon has appeared in the sky. Moon holds a very important position in the Vedic culture as well. Hindus did not celebrate their months according to calendar years but they did according to the moon entering their signs.

Moon is the indicator of many things. Mother, females, public, happiness, well-being, femininity and beauty, eyesight and mind are some of the important ones. As mercury is perceived as a symbol of intellect, many are astonished at the moon being called the indicator of mind. One needs to understand that the moon rules the mind but how things are perceived and absorbed by the mind are ruled by the influence of mercury. Since the moon moves from one planet to the second at a fast pace, it is also known as a rabbit or a hare in the Vedic culture.

Chandra rules over the zodiac sign Cancer. The influence of the moon is seen in the Taurus sign and its lack is seen in the Scorpio sign. Jupiter, Sun and Mars are the friends of the moon and Venus, Saturn and Mercury are its enemies. Worshipping Chandra on Mondays is very effective for getting your prayers fulfilled. Chandra Namaskar in yoga comprises asanas beneficial for the human body. It can also be known as moon salutation. It follows the same pattern as Surya namaskar but goes from side to side instead of front to back.

Rohini, Hast, Shravan, Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapad are some of the constellations ruled by the moon. It is also very bent towards Kritika, Uttra Phalguni, Uttra Khad, Jyestha, Revati and Ashlesha constellations. Moonstone and natural pearls are the stones ruled by the moon and silver is the metal ruled by Chandra. Moon rules the Northwest direction. It is the strongest on Mondays.

Moon rules the left nostril, brain, eyes and breasts in a person. He is a loving God and pleases children and elders. One can be assured of being relieved from sorrows, mental illnesses after praying to the moon.
